I suppose our happiest moment has just the faintest shadow lurking somewhere near it, some doubt, or fear – fear perhaps of hurting someone, or some ideal, God, perhaps the moment itself. And then I suppose our really happy moments are when we don’t know they’re there, and we look back and say, “I was happy then.”
One would prefer the untramelled happiness of a sweet dream. But one must go on, eliminating the fears and doubts and feelings of safety and love, until one can be fully conscious of being happy and still enjoy the happiness.
